
Danica Sue Patrick is an American former professional racer. She is the most successful woman in American open-wheel car racing the history of open-wheel racing. The victory she won in Indy Japan 300 was her first victory. With the permission of her parents she quit high school and relocated to the United Kingdom in 1998 to pursue a career in the sport. Patrick competed in Formula Vauxhall before moving to the United States in 2001 because of a lack in funding. In 2002, she participated in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races for Rahal Letterman Racing. Patrick then raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series for the next two years. She was third in the championship standings for the 2004 season. During this time, she became first woman to secure a place in the series. She was awarded the Rookie of the Year at both the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and the 2005 IndyCar Series. She made progress throughout the following two seasons with Rahal Letterman Racing 2006, and then Andretti Green Racing 2007. In 2008, Patrick followed up her Japan victory to place at sixth place overall in the driver's standings. She then improved to secure fifth the following season. This was her best finish to date of third in the Indianapolis 500, the best performance of any female at the race. Patrick's overall performance deteriorated during the year, but she achieved two second-place finishes at oval tracks before she left IndyCar following the 2011 season, focusing exclusively on stock car racing.
